Onwards and fowards

Hi all,

February was productive but my steam page still feels ages away. I had to part ways with the artist as I believe his workload was too high and the work was not progressing. No hard feelings as he was a nice fellow and I enjoyed working with him. I am currently looking at other options. There are positives to this, I was sad at first that I had to delay my launch (I want the steam page open for at least 1 year), but the reality of how much work is left means that this is just extra time to work on which is great.

Things I got done in February

  • Some big playtesting feedback was implemented! From juice, to clearer win states
  • The basics of the tutorial system are in. I designed this to be flexible and future proof so it has taken some time but I am super happy with it. Still some steps to go but I am damn close.
  • Refactoring. I have been trying to apply an approach of refactoring as I go, so instead of jamming a feature in with extra methods and properties, I plan it out a bit better and I change the existing code base to be neater and better designed. This adds some considerable time NOW but will pay off in the long run.

It certainly feels like this is not much for a month of work but I have been chipping away at it regularly. I am hoping when the tutorial is done I'll be in a good spot to do quicker iterations and features.

Things I want to get done in March

Let's be honest, I over-commit every month. This is not a bad thing but I want to try to be a bit more realistic.

  • The code priority is finishing the playtesting feedback work. I know this is me procrastinating the trailer and the steam page but I think it is worth it as it will lead toward a larger playtest followed by a demo for public feedback
  • Start a conversation with an artist for the steam page art
  • A second playtest with the same friend
  • The secondary color scheme of the game assets
  • Bonus: Adding mountains, an impassable terrain. This will be more complicated than you'd think as it changes behaviors
  • Bonus: A playtest with a second friend
